EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN – Renewal NCCR

Course Description:
This NCCP course meets or exceeds the EMT National Continued Competency Requirements (NCCR) and has received approval of the State of Minnesota EMS Regulatory Board. All instructors hold certification from the Minnesota EMS regulatory board of EMT or Paramedic and have at minimum 3 years of experience on an ALS Transporting Ambulance. All Lead Instructors have completed a DOT instructor course or its equivalent as approved by the EMSRB. The EMT is one of the most utilized pre-hospital caregivers in the Emergency Medical Services System. The goal is to provide the students with a review of and updates to the core knowledge and skills needed to function in the capacity of an EMT in the State of Minnesota. Upon successful completion of this course, the participant will be eligible for recertification as an EMT by the State of Minnesota EMS Regulatory Board.

Prerequisite:

  • EMT certificate either current or within 48 months of expiration.

Course Goals and Objectives:

  • Show knowledge in the roles, responsibilities and ethics of an EMT
  • Show proficient with all skills associated with the EMT NCCP Requirements
  • Demonstrate critical thinking skills in patient assessment
  • Recognize hazards associated in the EMT role

Course Activities:
Class will be split between lecture and hands-on skills. Students will be working with other students practicing all skills associated with being an EMT along with patient assessment.

Attendance/Grading:
Attendance is mandatory to complete the required curriculum for this course. Quizzes may be given periodically after the completion of various modules and skills. Grading will be the accumulation of quizzes and skills stations. Points will be awarded for class participation and skill checks.

All students are required to complete the required NCCR curriculum to be eligible to achieve the EMT recertification. In the event of a failure to complete the required course curriculum, the student will meet with the instructors, course coordinator, EMS department head and medical director, or a subset of these, to discuss a course of action to meet the requirements.

Text/Uniforms:
A textbook is not required for this course; however, curriculum is taken from the AAOS Emergency Care and Transportation of the Sick and Injured, eleventh edition as well as the information outlined in the NCCR. All additional study guides, books and materials will be the responsibility of the student.

Clinical/Ride-Along (Optional):
Students will be provided with a mentor to follow throughout their shift. Students may be asked to take vitals and or help with the care of a patient. Students that discuss the treatment, diagnosis, name or anything relating to any patient or patient care with any person other than their mentor is violating HIPPA laws. Any student in violation of the law will be expelled from this course with no refund; and, if any legal action is taken from this, the student will be solely responsible.

During the ride-along and clinical, each student in required to wear:

  • White button down shirt (long or short sleeve) or white polo shirt with NO LOGO’S
  • Black or navy blue pants (NO JEANS)
  • Black shoes or EMS boots (NO TENNIS SHOES)
  • Black dress or work socks must be worn if wearing shoes
  • Name tag will be provided for clinical

Fees:
A fee of $220 for this EMT NCCR Refresher course is due no later than the first day of class.
