Course Description:
The Emergency Medical Responder course meets or exceeds the United States DOT Curriculum and the State of Minnesota EMS Regulatory Board. All instructors hold certification from the Minnesota EMS regulatory board of EMT-Basic or EMT-Paramedic and have at minimum 3 years experience on an ALS Transporting Ambulance. All lead instructors have completed a DOT instructor course. The Emergency Medical Responder is an integral part of the Emergency Medical Services System. The goal of this course is to provide the students with core knowledge, skills, and attitudes to function in the capacity of an Emergency Medical Responder. Upon successful completion of this course, the participant will be certified as an Emergency Medical Responder by the State of Minnesota EMS Regulatory Board.
Course Goals and Objectives:
- Obtain a base knowledge of the human anatomy and physiology
- Show knowledge in the roles, responsibilities and ethics of an Emergency Medical Responder
- Become proficient with all skills associated with the Emergency Medical Responder
- Obtain critical thinking skills in patient assessment
- Recognize hazards associated with the Emergency Medical Responder role
Course Activities:
Class will be split between lecture and hands-on skills. Students will be working with other students, practicing all skills associated with the Emergency Medical Responder, including patient assessment. Each student will have the option of doing ride-alongs with Mdewakanton Public Safety Ambulance.
Attendance/Grading:
Attendance is mandatory to complete the course. Quizzes may be given periodically after the completion of various modules and skills. There may be a mid-course written and skills exam covering all material covered up to that point. There will be a final written and skills exam covering all material covered in this course. Students are required to pass the required skills exam to meet the Emergency Medical Responder Curriculum requirements. Grading will be the accumulation of all quizzes and tests combined. Points will be awarded for class participation, quizzes, and skill practice. Extra credit may be given out in class.
91-100% = A
90-81% = B
80-71% = C
70-61% = D
All students are required to have a score of no less than 70% to complete the course and achieve the Emergency Medical Responder Certification. Students will be allowed to re-take the final written and skills exams, three attempts will be allowed. In the failure to meet the grade percentage minimum the student will meet with the instructors, course coordinator, EMS department head and medical director to discuss a course of action to meet the requirements.
Text/Uniforms:
Each student will be provided with a copy of AAOS Emergency Medical Responder, fifth edition and accompanying workbook; this also comes with an online access code to the Jones and Bartlett Course Navigation web page. These will be valuable tools to assist you with this course. Uniforms are not required for this course; however, hands on skills are required for course completion, and students should dress in a way that will accommodate this.
Ride-Along (optional):
There will be additional paperwork to fill out prior to the ride-alongs. Students will be provided with a mentor to follow throughout their shift. Students may be asked to take vitals and or help with the care of a patient. Students are not allowed to discuss the treatment, diagnosis, name or anything relating the patient to that given incident to anyone except their mentor. Any student found breaking this rule will be expelled from this course with no refund.
During optional ambulance ride-alongs each student in required to wear:
- White button down shirt (long or short sleeve) or white polo shirt with NO LOGO’S
- Black or navy blue pants (NO JEANS)
- Black shoes or EMS boots (NO TENNIS SHOES)
- Black dress or work socks must be worn if wearing shoes
- Name tag will be provided for clinical
Fees:
A fee of $500 for this Emergency Medical Responder course is due no later than the first day of class. The course book and workbook are included.
Student Complaints:
All Student Complaints should be reported to the Course Coordinator for investigation and resolution.
